The 5S's are a systematic and rigorous process of workplace organization, that builds a culture of continuous improvement and empowerment throughout the company. Foundation of a Lean Manufacturing program, the 5S's help to create on the shopfloor:
- the sense of discipline in daily operations - the implementation of standard visual operating procedures (the starting block of any productivity improvement program) - the continuous search for improvement ideas.
Although conceptually simple, the 5S's implementation is a complex endeavour since the real challenge is to:
- Start a team dynamic with everyone's involvement - Introduce areas of autonomous team decision-making and continually expand them as the team member’s knowledge and skills mature - Build a vision of workplace transformation, team development and visual standardization shared by management and all employees.
